“What’s going on at the Buddhist monastery?”
That was the question on everyone’s lips when Garry Clement and Michel Juneau-Katsuya, authors with a collective seventy years in law enforcement and intelligence, arrived on Prince Edward Island for a book launch. Clement and Juneau-Katsuya had come to PEI to discuss their careers on the frontlines of Canadian intelligence and the growing need for vigilance in combating international espionage operations. They were astonished, not only by the massive turnout by the questions the crowd had to ask.
Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), nestled on the Eastern seaboard of the Atlantic, holds a rich history deeply intertwined with Canada's narrative. Despite its small size, P.E.I. played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's destiny, notably through its dedication to defending freedoms during both World Wars. During the tumultuous years of the early 20th century, brave Islanders answered the call to arms, making untold sacrifices on foreign battlefields. Their courage and resilience exemplified the island's steadfast commitment to the ideals of liberty and justice.
However, in more recent times, P.E.I. has faced a different kind of battle—one against the insidious forces of corruption and exploitation. An impoverished province often overlooked by the rest of Canada, P.E.I. seemed to experience an economic revival with the introduction of the Provincial Nomination Program (PNP). This initiative brought immigrants from around the world, including a significant focus on China. Yet, beneath the surface of this apparent prosperity lurked shadows of deceit and manipulation.
As Clement and Juneau-Katsuya began to dig deeper into the iconic red mud of PEI’s soil, they began to unearth a series of dizzying revelations. A Border Services investigation called off. Money laundering in government programs. Suicides and bodies dissappearing. A hotel on the island that somehow served as the mailing address and home to over five-hundred former Chinese nationals. And all around them, sinister forces creeping around a Buddhist Monastery not sanctioned by the Dalai Lama, tinted with the mark of the Chinese Communist Party.
This is a story of corruption, of backroom deals in Canada’s smallest province that have put the entire nation in jeopardy. With the tact and brilliance they brought to their illustrious careers in the RCMP and CSIS, Clement and Juneau-Katsuya’s investigation unveils a program of elite capture and covert warfare waged from Charlottetown to Beijing. It is also the story of brave islanders, of their vigilance and unwavering resolve in the face of overwhelming forces threatening their home, fighting to prevent PEI from becoming a forward-operating base for the CCP
