The Chilling Phone Call
It was a cold November night and my wife, Lee and I had just taken possession of our new home in North Gower, Ontario having transferred from the Vancouver Drug Section to the RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa. We along with my sister Brenda were in the process of unpacking boxes as the movers had just unloaded our possessions. Fortunately, our phone was hooked up
This move had not been planned but occurred because of having been involved in a successful drug undercover operation wherein my “evil twin” Bobby (“Spade”) Williams successfully infiltrated several well know criminal organizations in Vancouver. Due to a potential threat, it was decided that a move to Ottawa was in order until the trials were completed. Unfortunately, earlier in the week the DOJ Crown erred when she indicated I would not be available in court for a few days as I was transferred to Ottawa. This allegedly resulted in a known contract killer from Montreal meeting with one of the individuals I had been able to infiltrate leading to a further need for more detailed protection.
I received a phone call from then, Cpl. Hugh Stewart, who retired a few years back as a Staff Sergeant and who is best known for the pepper spraying at the University of British Columbia protests when the Prime Minister was visiting. Hugh, who I had the utmost respect for and recognizing him as a cop’s cop directed me to take my family immediately to the nearest OPP Detachment, arm myself and call him once I arrived at the OPP office. Knowing Hugh as I did, I was aware by the tone of his voice he was not joking and that something had occurred which seemed to be imminent.
As this was my 3rd threat that occurred in my career and one that sounded serious, I must admit a lot of thoughts go through your mind, especially seeing I was once again involving my wife and now my sister in a potentially dangerous situation.
More on this later as there is a lot to cover before I got to this stage in my career.
