Canada-Hong Kong Link condemns unjust sentencing of Joshua Wong

Joshua Wong is accused of collaborating with outside forces. Our author Benedict Rogers name was brought up over 30 times in the trial of Jimmy Lai and what the Chinese Communist Party is doing to silence Jimmy Lai, Joshua Wong as well as others in Hong Kong and in Canada and the US are to numerous to mention. Today I bring you a press release from Ivy Li of Canada-Hong Kong Link that demands Joshua Wong be released.

TORONTO — Canada-Hong Kong Link (CHKL) strongly condemns the sentencing of prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy leader Joshua Wong for another ten years on November 5 (Hong Kong Time) under Beijing’s draconian National Security Law framework.

This sentencing is not an act of justice, but an explicit political maneuver by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its authoritarian Beijing-appointed administration in Hong Kong. Having already completed previous arbitrary prison sentences and nearing the end of his term for the peaceful 2020 primary election case, Joshua Wong is once again being subjected to prolonged incarceration through newly weaponized charges.

The core message behind this sentencing is undeniable: the CCP will manufacture excuse after excuse, layer bogus charge upon bogus charge, to keep Joshua Wong behind bars indefinitely. Beijing lives in constant fear of his leadership, his voice, and the enduring spirit of Hong Kong's movement for democracy, human rights, and autonomy.

"The relentless judicial persecution of Joshua Wong demonstrates the utter cowardice of Beijing and its puppet regime in Hong Kong," said Gloria Fung, Immediate Past President of Canada-Hong Kong Link. "They realize that no length of prison time can extinguish the democratic aspirations of Hongkongers, so they resort to unending legal traps to keep leaders like Joshua permanently isolated."

Canada-Hong Kong Link calls on the Government of Canada to take swift, concrete parliamentary and diplomatic action:

  1. Diplomatic Sanctions: Implement targeted Magnitsky sanctions against Hong Kong officials, prosecutors, and judges responsible for orchestrating political prosecutions under the National Security Law.

  2. Multilateral Pressure: Coordinate with international allies at the UN Human Rights Council and G7 to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Joshua Wong and all political prisoners in Hong Kong.

  3. Safeguarding Canadian Sovereignty: Hold Beijing accountable for transnational repression targeting the Hongkonger-Canadian diaspora who speak out against these ongoing human rights atrocities.

Protests will be organized across Canada by CHKL and other Hong Kong-Canadian groups this Sunday (November 8) to show solidarity with Joshua Wong. More details will be announced soon. CHKL is also one of the signatories of an international joint statement initiated by Freedom House condemning the sentencing.
